HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
Signs and Symptoms:

Cardiovascular: Decreased contractility of heart muscle
Decreased cardiac output
Prolongation of QT and ST intervals on ECG
Dysrhythmias

Neurologic: Personality changes
Psychiatric manifestations of depression, anxiety, psychosis
Irritability
Memory impairment
Headache, increased intracranial pressure
Seizures
Positive Chvostek’s sign or Trousseau’s phenomenon
Tremor
Paresthesias of lips, hands, feet
Hyperactive deep-tendon reflexes
Disorientation, confusion (in older adult)

Renal: Urinary frequency
Urinary incontinence

Visual: Eye changes, including lenticular opacities, cataracts, papilledema

Gastrointestinal: Abdominal cramps
Fecal incontinence (in older adult)
Malabsorption

Integumentary: Dry, scaly skin
Hair loss on scalp and body
Brittle nails, transverse ridging
Changes in developing teeth, lack of tooth enamel

Musculoskeletal: Fatigue
Weakness
Painful muscle cramps
Skeletal x-ray changes, osteosclerosis
Soft tissue calcification
Difficulty in walking
